The following films and documentaries were selected for teachers who want to learn more about the individual lives of those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Autism the Musical (2007)
Directed and Produced by Tricia Regan This documentary follows the lives of five children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder as they write and rehearse an original theatre production. The Miracle Project, founded by Elaine Hall, focuses on helping children with autism express themselves, while learning to socialize with others. The documentary highlights the diverse needs of children with ASD while celebrating their unique talents and abilities. The film is an excellent resource for teachers because it features the perspectives of parents, children and professionals all learning about ASD. As well, the children represent a spectrum from low support needs, to high support needs. The film demonstrates that with understanding, patience, and love we can all learn to be more accepting and supporting of those with autism spectrum disorder. |
Temple Grandin (2010)
Directed by Mick Jackson A film based on the life and achievements of Temple Grandin, a woman born with autism. This film follows Grandin's life, played by actress Claire Danes, as she comes to understand and explain the world through her disability. Grandin is known for the creation of her squeeze machine, as well as the way she has revolutionized cattle handing practices in slaughterhouses. This film is unique because it was created alongside Grandin herself and has tried to capture how autistic people think about the world in pictures. Temple Grandin celebrates the unique autistic mind and celebrates the accomplishments of one very special woman.

The Boy Inside (2006)
Directed by Marianne Kaplan Filmmaker Marianne Kaplan tells the emotional story of her son Adam who has Asperger Syndrome. The film documents the honest struggle of family members as they attempt to understand the complex developmental disorder. This film is a must-see for teachers because Adam's story provides a glimpse into the real challenges faced at school for those with ASD. The film shows the effects that exclusion and bullying can have, and calls for an attitude of acceptance and inclusion for not only Adam, but all children. This would be a great film to show students to build tolerance and understanding for people along the Autism Spectrum Disorder. |
Fly Away (2011)
Directed by Janet Grillo This film celebrates the relationship between a mother and daughter as they navigate the unknown world of Autism Spectrum Disorder. A story of unconditional love, patience and perseverance, this film shows the sometimes challenging experiences of raising a child with autism. Actress Ashley Rickards portrays teenage Mandy with remarkable insight into the autistic mind. This film is educational for teachers because it shows what life may be like for someone with high-support needs diagnosed on the spectrum. |
